Scholar athletes are recognized in grand fashion with this antique premium created by famous Philadelphia photography studio Gilbert & Bacon. These masterful lens magicians from "The City of Brotherly Love" showed the University of Pennsylvania Quakers 1896 football team some love with this dynamic 20x27 premium poster featuring's Penn's talented players. The 1896 Quakers season was a very impressive campaign that ended with a 14-1 record, including victories over Harvard, Penn State, Cornell, Navy, Virginia and Carlisle. Their one loss came against eventual National Champion Lafayette, by a baseball-like score of 6-4. Five of the eleven players pictured were named to the 1896 College Football All-American team, with team captain Charles "Buck" Wharton, Charlie Gelbert, Wyllie Woodruff, L.J. Uffenheimer and John Minds.

This ancient poster shows considerable wear, including multiple small tears and notches on the perimeter, a few tears in the field that do not affect the photos and a swath of moderate soiling at bottom. An heraldic crest at top features a stack of books at left, the date "1896" at center over crossed swords and a football at right, with the title "Pennsylvania Foot-Ball Team" above. The eleven individual player photos arrayed in postcard-like boxes remain distinct and at bottom the printed credits read "Photos by Gilbert & Bacon" at left and "Published by The Pennsylvanian" at right. The Gilbert & Bacon Studio was a prominent producer of cabinet photos in the late 1800s and early 1900s, serving as Penn's go to photographers. They also contributed images to the Goodwin tobacco card series and non-sport actress card issues.
