While the 1940 endeavor culminated with an embarrassing 73-0 loss in the championship contest, the Redskins were firmly planted in their new home in the Nation’s Capital, making their third of six title game appearances over a 10-year span. This near-complete run of (7/11) gameday programs were issued during that memorable campaign. Includes:
September 22 vs. New York Giants: issued at Griffith Stadium, the 52-page guide presents (GD) with covers/pages intact, but has man-made hole punchings near the spine to facilitate previous binder storage.
October 6 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers: issued at Forbes Field, the 24-page publication features an illustration of Knute Rockne on the front cover and a Franklin Roosevelt campaign ad on the back cover; presents (VG) with minor paper loss (from previous mounting) on back cover. Covers and pages remain intact.
October 13 vs. Chicago Cardinals: issued at Griffith Stadium, the 52-page program presents (VG) with vertical compacting fold. Cover and pages remain completely intact.
October 20 vs. Philadelphia Eagles: issued at Shibe Park, the 20-page guide presents (VG) with covers/pages intact. Covers remain intact, though have separation along the spine.
October 27 vs. Detroit Lions: issued at the University of Detroit Stadium (where the Lions temporarily resided from 1934-1937, and again in 1940), the 36-page publication presents (VG) with pages intact. Covers are present, but separated from the spine.
November 3 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers: issued at Griffith Stadium, the 52-page program presents (VG-EX) with covers/pages intact.
November 17 vs. Chicago Bears; issued at Griffith Stadium, the 52-page guide presents minimally (VG-EX) with covers/pages intact and a faint penciled notation on front cover. The “Skins beat the Bears, 7-3 that afternoon, which was hardly indicative of how their championship tilt would go just three weeks later!
Missing are: September 15 (vs. Brooklyn Dodgers at Griffith Stadium); November 10 (vs. Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field); November 24 (vs. New York Giants at Polo Grounds); and December 1 (vs. Philadelphia Eagles at Griffith Stadium).
