The eponymous legend of baseball’s most prestigious pitching honor, Cy Young set the standard for mound excellence and was the flame-throwing cause of a five-foot addition to the distance between the pitcher’s rubber and home plate. This vintage baseball is autographed by the unparalleled hurler, who has added a telling inscription. The medium is a mildly toned unofficial sphere with “American Special League” trademark stampings. The alternating red-and-black laces remain vibrant, setting the framework for the main attraction. On a side panel, Young (d.1955) has signed in blue-ink steel tip fountain pen. While the scripting (“5-6” strength) has endured fading, it remains complete and legible and is accompanied by Young’s inscription of “511,” which is widely recognized as the game’s most indelible milestone. To put the value of this treasure into perspective, Cy Young autographs on any surface are decidedly coveted. A single-signed baseball showcasing Young's endorsement is rarer, still. But finding the latter with an inscription of the most familiar (not to mention, most unreachable) numerals in the all-time pitching record book is the ultimate find to which no other exemplars can compare. Accompanying is a full photo LOA from JSA.
